Tisch College, Medford/Somerville, Mass. - Recent veterans who have volunteered since returning to the United States show a better adjustment to civilian life than their fellow returned servicemen and women who have not volunteered, according to a new report issued in time for Veterans Day. The report shows that volunteering helps bolster ties to the community and eases the transition back to civilian life.

Very interesting study, I am quite surprised with the results though!
This isn’t surprising at all. Many studies have shown volunteering makes everyone feel better. I can personally say I feel better when I help out.
Its good report and interesting Press Release. Good Results achieved
The problem is that being a veteran isn’t an edge when you’re on the job hunt. While you have attained skills that are valuable in the military, you are likely without a college degree if you enlisted at 18 years old.
Plus, the skills you learn in the military aren’t the same skills that employers are looking for in the workplace. Especially in this economy, they want people with the kind of experience you’d gain during post-high school jobs, internships, or work study programs.
Many veterans do have the qualities that an employer looks for — dedication, strong work ethic, trustworthiness, the list goes on — but it’s the education and career experience that gets in the way.
I think it’s great that Lakeland is so helpful with education and ESPECIALLY support groups — jumping from military life straight back to civilian life, e.g. going to classes, is a difficult adjustment, so the support groups are probably really helpful. Just having that support system among classmates and being able to talk to someone who can understand and relate to your experience really helps. “

A common misunderstanding is that by this method a hypothesis can be proven or tested. Generally a hypothesis is used to make predictions that can be tested by observing the outcome of an experiment. If the outcome is inconsistent with the hypothesis, then the hypothesis is rejected. However, if the outcome is consistent with the hypothesis, the experiment is said to support the hypothesis. This careful language is used because researchers recognize that alternative hypotheses may also be consistent with the observations. In this sense, a hypothesis can never be proven, but rather only supported by surviving rounds of scientific testing and, eventually, becoming widely thought of as true (or better, predictive), but this is not the same as it having been proven. A useful hypothesis allows prediction and within the accuracy of observation of the time, the prediction will be verified. As the accuracy of observation improves with time, the hypothesis may no longer provide an accurate prediction. In this case a new hypothesis will arise to challenge the old, and to the extent that the new hypothesis makes more accurate predictions than the old, the new will supplant it.
But it’s perhaps because they want to volunteer, that makes it easier for them to adjust? just a thought.
Thanks for the post, downloading the docs. I’m an Online MBA student at LSBF and got an assignment related to the topic you discuss… Thanks for the info!
thank you great post
Social relationships and a lack of isolation when returning from war are key indicators of mental well being.
Thanks for sharing this report! It is not so obvious as somebody thinks.
Was surprised with the results

This is a pretty interesting study, though it seems that there may be other factors involved, such as the person’s willingness to do volunteer work in the first place. Also the presence of meaningful relationships upon return from deployment is probably one of the most important factors contributing to effective readjustment.
Hmmm could it be just that Veterans that are already better adjusted (no PTSD, psychological issues, etc.) have more of a tendency to volunteer?

While it is true that military life is different than civil, the first important values are obtained for the person and work, such as discipline or accountability. What is there to promote adaptation to civilian life through training and education.
This graph report is useful and informative thanks for posting

This really looks like an interesting study, though it also appears that there is some uncertainty as to the validity of its methods and accuracy of the conclusions.
Your states have good standards for arts. That is where I would start.
Thank you for this information. You have done a great job. So many figures, everything is so exactly. Now we can see all demografic picture of the alection.Thank you for highlighting this. Keep up your work.
Since most time of their lives were spent to serve other people, it wouldn’t be hard for them to engage themselves into volunteering now. That’s why, I’m not actually amazed with the result.
yes, you help yourself when you help others. Mainly because you don’t spend the time feeling sorry for yourself when you have to focus on the needs of others. I imagine with servicemen, they risk their lives to serve–that’s where they find their purpose, so it makes sense to maintain that sense of purpose however they can.
thx for this information
Thank you for sharing the report with us to know more about civilian life.
The report on volunteering is excellent,it’s done with proper care. Thanks for publishing this informative post.
A pretty interesting study, thanks for the report,It is not so obvious as somebody thinks.
It would be easy for every individual if they actually know the value of volunteering from the very start. Well, you will surely get positive result if this is the case.
The research shows that volunteering helps bolster ties to the community and eases the transition back to civilian life. Serving in the military may have given a large portion of veterans the opportunity, motivation, and skills to participate more actively in their communities upon their return.
Thank you for sharing. The statistics is very interesting and I think is not bias.
Those are pretty interesting findings. I have been volunteering at the local fire departments myself and like knowing that I am helping the community in the process.
Those are accurate and interesting facts you have kept in front of us, thanks

Hey, another good article with delicious commentary! consultant
These are good statistics, it is so sad to think of the servicemen returning bitter and lost in the realities of day to day life. It is reassuring to know that if they are volunteering then they are more likely to be going in with their eyes open and have a shot at a happier life over all. Thanks for the info.
Very interesting study, I am quite surprised with the results though!

Hi! I read your post about “Volunteering Eases Return to Civilian Life for Young Veterans ” and found it really interesting. Thanks!
The college was founded with the aid of a $10 million donation by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam in 2000 to encourage students to perform volunteer and public services for the community.

Plumbing jobs
Volunteering is a great way to get relevant job experience. While being in the forces does require some fantastic skills, the very nature of the job can stunt creativity. What platoon leader wants soliders who think for themselves and come up with their own solutions. They want people who follow orders.
So volunteering can help those who have left the forces to reignite their creative spark which is sought after in the corporate world in addition to leadership skills and the ability to think for oneself.
This is a great post and it deals with many aspects of life that are in fcat important. Such as setting boundaries in life that we should not cross (ie parenting).

thank you for great job
The problem is that being a veteran is not an advantage when you’re in search of employment. While you have succeeded skills that are useful for the military, probably without a college degree when he enlisted at 18 years of age.
you have great point here. thanks for your sharing.
Its not too surprising that they have an easier time adjusting when they are better connected to their community.

we should change the future strategy
I dont know if they deserve a second chance.
Recent veterans who have volunteered since returning to the United States show a better adjustment to civilian life than ones that did not volunteer, interesting read but I kind of felt that I knew this already even before reading it.
Maybe rather than fearing people who came from war, we should help and heal them? Indirectly, fellow citizens, they did fight for your countries.
maybe in the future we will change something
The future looks brighter every day over here.
that chart is brilliant… It is so real.
maybe we should change it
