All population and turnout estimates are based on the Census Bureau's 2004 Current Population Survey November Voting and Registration Supplement. State exit polls are used to estimate share of the electorate by age and presidential vote by age. Voter turnout rates are calculated using the Census citizen method.
Sample sizes in Washington, DC are too small to reliably estimate youth voter turnout.
- In 2004, 47% of 18-24 year-old citizens turned out nationally, and 66% of citizens 25 years & older turned out.
- In 2002, 19% of 18-24 year-old citizens turned out nationally, and 50% of citizens 25 & older turned out.
- In 2000, 36% of 18-24 year-old citizens turned out nationally, and 63% of citizens 25 years & older turned out.
- In 1998, 19% of 18-24 year-old citizens turned out nationally, and 49% of citizens 25 & older turned out.
