Young Voters and the Web of Politics: Key Findings

Candidate Sites: Issues

In addition to assessing the degree of overlap between youth engagement and candidate web site issue discussions, we also examined the rate at which candidates made age-specific appeals in their discussion of political issues on their campaign sites. Specifically, we coded for the presence of either implicit or explicit appeals to younger citizens within the issues pages. As a point of comparison, we also probed for the presence or absence of appeals to senior citizens.

For example, we found that when discussing the issue of education, 23.3% of candidates made some form of appeal to younger voters. Henry Hyde's site provides an example of this with his reference to Pell Grants.
