“This study compared more than 1,000 high school students who participated in service-learning programs with those who did not participate in schools matched for similar demographics and student achievement profiles. The intention was to estimate the effects of service-learning compared to more traditional ways of teaching similar subject areas. The outcomes measured ranged from civic knowledge, behaviors, and dispositions to school engagement factors, such as attachment to school and enjoyment of coursework, that generally predict academic success. Students came from sites in the southeast, north central, and western parts of the United States. More than half of the students in the sample were Latino/Hispanic.”

Individuals have different forms of learning preferences and styles. To consider a more vocational approach such as learning Language, English, Maths, Science, Politics, Religion and more core subjects such as art, photography, through community engagement and project involvements is a fantastic approach to teaching outside of the normal classroom. I have observed some fantastic achievements by under privileged and the social elite by offering education that is based on engagement and self fulfilling. Whilst we often target the disadvantaged it is also the elite who are required to learn humility, and experience a broader social setting to appreciate their fortunate positioning and general use of power that accompanies wealth.

I agree with the above post. It’s a known facts that some are more academic than others, yet does not mean there less capable. Some of the greatest people alive were academic, my dad left school at 14 and was earning £70k a year as an electrical engineer. I believe that the schooling system is farse, it doesnt teach the career paths, they tell you that you must goto UNI and obtain a degree. I know a handful of people who have spent 4 years a UNI and still haven’t found a job after a year and are actually claiming benefits. I seriously believe that the schooling system needs looking at and i think there needs to be more than the known. great article though
The activity has not shown any significant progress. I would have stopped it here if I were you.
Service-learning programs & traditional way of teachings are completely different,so their impact on students will also be different.

Kids learn from play and games as well as academic studies. It’s good to see someone is taking the trouble to study all aspects of these things.
The People’s Republic of China conducted censuses in 1953, 1964, and 1982. In 1987 the government announced that the fourth national census would take place in 1990 and that there would be one every ten years thereafter. The 1982 census, which reported a total population of 1,008,180,738, is generally accepted as significantly more reliable, accurate, and thorough than the previous two. Various international organizations eagerly assisted the Chinese in conducting the 1982 census, including the United Nations Fund for Population Activities, which donated US$15.6 million for the preparation and execution of the census.
