December 2007
Based on data from the Civic and Political Health of the Nation surveys (2002 and 2006), this fact sheet investigates the correlation between television consumption and civic engagement. The research found that in nineteen different civic activities young people who watch TV less than two hours a day participated in more civic activities than their peers who watch between two and four hours a day and those who watch four or more hours a day. Most notably light TV viewers were more likely to be involved in solving community problems (23.9 percent), raise money for a charity (30.9 percent) and be an active member of a group (21.3 percent).

I think that the result was easily predictable… That’s not surprising that the youth spend so much time watching television. But indeed that’s not so bad, much worth is that they spend so much time playing computering games and playstations… this is really a threat to their minds and consciousness.
Your work is really perfect!
From the ads you observe on TV to the music you discover on the radio. Furthermore art can behave as an agent for communal engagement in the improvement of the quality of life in our community and challenging times.
All your researches are paid off..Thanks for sharing
The impact of television on youth can’t be believed. It’s just squeezing their civic activities.
I’ve been waiting on this one for a while, this is good news. Thenx
I want to take this moment to say that I really love this blog. It has been a good resource of information for me in my research. Thank you so much admin.
compensatory damages
Tv consumption really helps civic engagement.
work is great and fully develop enough.
And I bet there would be a correlation between how much time we spend watching TV and our incomes as well.
While TV at times can be valuable as “downtime” it certainly is a drain on more productive things that we can be doing from Civic engagement, better parents and increased income!
depressing factoid for those who claim that at least if Americans are watching, they are watching together. There’s now more TVs than people in an average American household, proposing that increasingly Americans are watching alone.
